I had a conversation with a friend this morning. She was preparing to go to Florida for the next couple of weeks, trying to escape the winter. Knowing my friend was an avid birdwatcher, I asked her who was filling her birdfeeders in her absence? To make a long story short, I will be going to her house daily to fill her birdfeeders.
Then it dawned on me, how many people feed the birds faithfully all winter until they go on a winter vacation or simply run out of bird seed.
Over the last couple of days, the number of birds on my feeder has nearly doubled. It is apparent that the natural seed available to the birds is running out. If you have been feeding the birds all winter, and suddenly stop, for as little as four or five days, you may be killing 20 to 40% of these birds who have been relying on you for food.
Just a little food for thought.
