Summer Solstice Lavender Festival

2979 Clarksville Road at the intersection of Cowan Creek Road in Vernon Township. This 60 acres of riparian corridor has been identified twice by the Ohio Biological Survey as the most unique area in Clinton County. Great fishing during the spring and early summer and designated Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society. Healthy amphibian, reptile and wild turkey populations as well as a rich biodiversity of plants. Limited bow hunting with written permission of the park board. Open to the public for passive recreation.

Culberson State Nature Preserve

The preserve is located in Clinton County approximately 1 mile southwest of Cowan Lake State Park. From SR 350, proceed south 1 mile on SR 730 to the preserve entrance. No facilities are available.

This 238-acre preserve is one of the few examples of the “white swamp forest” which once covered the uplands of southwestern Ohio. The forest grows on poorly drained, “white clay” soil which formed on the glacial materials deposited during the Illinoian What to Do www.clintoncountyohio.com 25 glacial period. The swamp forest is dominated by red maple and pin oak with substantial stands of shagbark hickory, shellbark hickory, swamp white oak, American elm and sweetgum. The northern shrub, winterberry, grows here near its southern limit, while the sweetgum, a southern species, is near its northern limit.

Recreational opportunities abound at this 7,000- acre state park in Clinton County. The park covers 700 acres of water, 1,000 acres of beach, four miles of hiking trails and one mile of mountain bike trails. Twenty-seven family cabins are available. Camping is also a popular activity with 254 campsites, 237 with electric. Sailing, swimming, hiking, fishing and hunting are also available at this quiet reserve.

60 acres of mature forest with 1.2 miles of hiking trails and marked white CCPD boundary posts. There are several examples of Canadian granite erratic rocks deposited in the Preserve.
